COVID-19: Osun discharges one index case, 109 foreign returnees

The Osun State has released one index case and 109 foreign returnees who came in to the State from United Kingdom and Cote d’Ivoire, respectively after tested negative of COVID-19. The governor, Adegboyega Oyetola disclosed this during a press briefing on Sunday at the State secretariat, Governors Office, Abere, Osogbo. Oyetola said, “One of the early cases in Osun has been discharged after testing negative twice to the Virus, in line with the prescribed protocol of the NCDC. “The 109 whose results came back negative have been released to join their families. Among them are: 11 to Oyo State, two are going to Lagos State, One to Ogun State, three each to Edo and Abia states, four to Delta State and one to Imo State while 85 will remain here in Osun. They have been advised to observe all the prescribed safety and preventive measures and to call our helplines if they start to feel unwell. The emergency line remains 293.

#COVID-19: Fayemi appoints Babalola, Fayose, others in resource mobilization committee

Governor Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti State Gov.) Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi on Saturday set up a 47-member panel of eminent citizens of the state into its Response Resource Mobilisation Committee as part of the efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Fayemi named the founder, Afe Babalola University, Chief Afe Babalola, as the grand patron of the committee, which has captains of industry, distinguished private sector players, renowned professionals and prominent members of Ekiti in the Diaspora as members. The governor also appointed three past governors of the state, Chief Niyi Adebayo, Chief Segun Oni and Chief Ayodele Fayose as patrons of the committee. Osun govt finds suspected Coronavirus patient who ran away from isolation

Osun State Government on Saturday announced that it has found an undisclosed person who was said to have vanished from the Ejigbo isolation centre in the early hours of the day. The Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Ismail Omipidan gave the update. "The person has been found within Ejigbo and returned to the State isolation centre for the pandemic Coronavirus, what we are currently doing is contact tracing because we want to ensure that everyone is safe." Omipidan told our correspondent during a telephone chat. Earlier, the state government raised an alarm thatan undisclosed person who is among the recent returnees from Cote d’ivoire suspected to a carrier of the pandemic Coronavirus has vanished from the Ejigbo isolation centre. According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Funke Egbemode, the government denied a rumour in the which stated that six out of the 127 returnees are on the run.

Prof. Akin Abayomi Lagos state government has released four coronavirus patients from the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba. This brings to a total of 24 COVID-19 patients discharged in Nigeria. This was announced by the Lagos state Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi during a briefing on Friday. Abayomi added that 91 percent of the total confirmed cases in Lagos state are Nigerians, while the remaining nine percent are foreigners. Also, the commissioner disclosed that Eti-Osa local government has the highest number of confirmed cases in the state. He added that Gbagada and Mobolaji Johnson Isolation Centres will be opened next week. Professor Abayomi said social distancing has been helpful in the fight against Coronavirus and urged residents to comply with the stay-at-home order. Before the dethronement, there was crisis in the Kano State House of Assembly on Monday over the issue. As of the time of filing this report, security had been beefed up at the House of Assembly complex. Nigerian professor claims he has 'discovered' the cure for coronavirus and lassa fever

A Nigerian Professor, Maduike Ezeibe has announced that he has discovered a possible cure for the dreaded coronavirus and lassa fever. The Professor of Virology at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) who once claimed to have discovered the therapy for the cure of HIV/AIDS, expressed confidence that the therapy which according to him, had already proved reliable in the "treatment of HIV/AIDS," would make coronavirus a thing of the past. Ezeibe who gave the chemical equation of the therapy as (AI4(SiO4)3+3Mg2SiO4-2AI2Mg3(SiO4)3) and also disclosed that “it’s a mechanism for curing Covid -19 and Lassa fever”, urged countries affected by the deadly virus to adopt his therapy for clinical trials on patients.   As Nigeria confirmed first case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Lagos State, the Federal Ministry of Health said it has already started working to identify all the contacts of the patient since he entered Nigeria. The ministry also cautioned against the abuse of social media and spread of misinformation that causes fear and panic. Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, in a statement, said that most people who become infected may experience only mild illness and recover easily, adding that it can be more severe in others, particularly the elderly and persons with other underlying chronic illnesses. The case which was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the beginning of the outbreak in China in January 2020. Soldiers Beat Up Lagos State Government Clean-Up Committee Officials

The enforcement team of the Ikoyi/Victoria Island Clean-up Committee of the Lagos State Government has been attacked by some military personnel. PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident happened at the Bonny Camp on the Victoria Island. In a statement on Wednesday, the government said the team had been conducting daily raids on the area. The officials were said to have on Tuesday visited the roundabout and under the bridge opposite the Bonny Camp, which served as a store and distribution point for goods sold on the streets. A bill seeking to amend section 308 of the 1999 Constitution to provide immunity for presiding officers of the National Assembly including the Senate president, speaker, deputy Senate president and deputy speaker yesterday scaled through second reading at the House of Representatives. Section 308 of the country’s constitution provides immunity to the president, vice president, governors and their deputies. The proposal is to amend the section to accommodate the presiding officers of both national and state assemblies. Daily Trust reports that thunderous rejection is trailing the proposal. This is the second time that the proposal would be made during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. At the eighth assembly, a similar bill sponsored by the then House Minority Leader, Leo Ogor did not see the light of the day. FIRS Sets April 12 Deadline For Taxpayers To Get TIN

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has again said it is mandatory for all taxpayers and companies to register and obtain the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and display it on all documents supporting business transactions before April 12, 2020. FIRS made this known in a public notice published on Monday which was signed by its Chairman, Muhammed Nami. It stated that every company or business “shall provide their TIN to relevant providers of financial services not later 12th April, 2020, in order to update their existing records for accounts opened prior to the coming into effect of the Finance Act, 2019.” It also said banks and other financial institutions are required to request for TIN as a precondition for opening new accounts for companies and any other business. It further explained that Section 3 of the Finance Act, 2019, substituted the provision of Section 10 of the Companies Income Tax Act (CITA) which explains that “every company shall have a Tax Identification Numbe...

Court Sentences Olisa Metuh To Seven Years In Prison Over N400m Money Laundering Case

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced former spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, to seven years in prison over a N400m fraud and money laundering case brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Justice Okon Abang, who delivered the ruling, had earlier found him guilty on all seven-count charge in the case that had been on for over four years. The court held that Metuh had "actual and constructive" knowledge of the N400m that was transferred to his company, Destra Night Ltd, from Office of the National Security Adviser. Abang said, "The fact of this case is that it is a story of shame and moral decay we live in this country by dissipating public funds recklessly. "It is endemic disease that has eaten deep into the fabrics of this nation. "There must be a change in the way we do things in this country."

Healing centre where concoctions are made from Qur’an shut down in Katsina

Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina state has ordered the closure of a traditional healing center in Tashar Wali area of Dutsi Local Government Council of the state. According to Channels Tv, the governor gave the directive after he paid an unscheduled visit to the center on his way back from Daura LGA. Masari during inspection of the home observed that the center was oozing with stench and not hygienic as a healing home. But the healer speaking to the governor explained that the stench from the centre was coming from some rooms in the building were concoctions were made from writings within the Holy Qur’an. According to the healer, the concoction was used to wash bodies to heal infirmities, while some women sometimes drink it for healing purposes. “The people visiting the home could end up being afflicted with various ailments as not even a pit latrine exist within the premises of the healing home,” Masari said. Boko Haram burns churches, kills soldier in new raid

  Two churches were burnt at the weekend by Boko Haram insurgents who attacked Garkida, Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Residential houses, hospitals, shops and vehicles were also torched by the terrorists. The Army on Sunday confirmed the death of a soldier. The burnt places of worship are a parish of the Living Faith (aka Winners Chapel) and Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa, a Nigeria (EYN) church. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri on Sunday visited Garkida to sympathise with the people. However, the 23 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army in a statement also said another soldier was injured by troops of 232 Battalion, who engaged the insurgents in gun duel. The statement by Major Haruna Mohammed Sani, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the 23 Armoured Brigade, indicated that the destruction would have been more extensive, but for intervention of the troops who killed some of the insurgents. Four Lecturers Who Award Fake Marks And Alter Results Exposed In Adamawa

According to Vanguard, the management of the Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola, has terminated the appointment of four of its lecturers over alleged examination malpractices especially alteration of examinations results. The affected lecturers (names withheld) were alleged to have been involved in examination results alterations and award of fake results to students who did not sit for the exams. A statement by the Polytechnic Information and Public Relations Officer, Albert Matila, said the management took the decision to terminate their appointment at its 140th meeting on Wednesday 19th February, 2020″. According to the release, the management considered the report of the Committee earlier set up to verify the results following complaints of alterations from some lecturers. They were alleged to have tampered with 727 candidates’ results in 21 courses and also gave fake results to some students who did not write the examination.

Attack on Oba: Oluwo of Iwo suspended for six months

    The Osun State Traditional Rulers’ Council has suspended embattled Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, for six months. He was suspended for alleged assault of the Agbowu of Ogbaagba, Dhikrulahi Akinropo, during a peace meeting last week in Osogbo, Osun State. The council also set up a committee headed by Orangun of Ila, Oba Wahab Adedotun, to further investigate issues involving Oluwo and Obas in Iwo land. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting at Osun State Government Secretariat, Abere, with Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, presiding.

The Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi, and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, said yesterday that parents of Almajiri children should be arrested and not their children, for constituting a nuisance to the society. Sanusi also called for enactment of laws by state governments to tackle injustices in marriages. Sanusi spoke as the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, said government and the courts would answer to Allah for refusing to grant justice. This is even as the First Lady, Dr. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, said her husband’s government was scared to leave office without meeting the expectations of Nigerians. SARS Officers In Ogun Shoot 2 Traders While Chasing Yahoo Boy

There was pandemonium on Thursday in the Olomore axis of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force allegedly shot two traders. The SARS operatives were reported to have stormed Olomore Pepper Market while chasing an internet fraudster also known as Yahoo boy, who ran into the market. Findings showed that stray bullets from the SARS officers’ gunshots hit two pepper sellers in the market during the chase. An eye witness identified simply as Adamu told The PUNCH that one of the victims was shot in the head and the other was shot in the leg. Adamu said the victims had been rushed to a nearby hospital. There has been no confirmation that the victim shot in the head died as of the time of filing this report but the other victim it was gathered is being treated at the undisclosed hospital.
